Farmers for waiving current harvest loans
A group of farmers from Valandhur in the Usilampatti bloc petitioned the collector here on Monday, demanding the waiver of ongoing harvest loans that farmers in the village had taken out from 2006 to 2009.
About 150 farmers in the village had obtained harvest loans from the primary agricultural cooperative society from 2006 to 2009 by mortgaging agricultural land.
Mr. Thirumurugan, one of the applicants, said that when obtaining the loans, the secretary of the cooperative was allegedly involved in mismanagement of the cases and that an investigation was underway. “Therefore, our farmers’ current harvest loans were not canceled when the ruling party in 2011 announced the waiver of the current harvest loans,” he said, adding that the investigation was not yet complete.
“The agricultural land mortgaged by the farmers is currently under the name of the cooperative society. Thus, farmers struggle without being able to sell their land. They are also unable to obtain additional crop loans, ”he said.
Since Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had announced the waiver of harvest loans, the district administration must take action to ensure that overdue harvest loans from farmers in Valandhur are canceled this time around, he said. added Mr. Thirumurugan.
