Wayne Rooney drops Teden Mengi transfer index after Manchester United loan

Wayne Rooney has hinted that Derby County has an agreement in principle to loan Teden Mengi for another season.

The promising Manchester United defender impressed on an East Midlands loan in the second half of this season, which left his manager, Rooney, desperate for his return.

Mengi has played both right-back and center-back in his seven Pride Park appearances.

Speaking after the Rams’ victory over Luton Town on Good Friday, Rooney revealed that he wants Mengi to return next season, but the decision now rests with the teenager.

“I would love for him to come back next season,” the former United striker told The Athletic. “It’s on the player now.”

Speaking last month, Mengi explained how much he enjoys working under Rooney’s leadership.

“I’m really having fun at Derby,” he told United internal media on loan. “It’s to be in a different environment with a great group of guys and a great manager in Wayne Rooney, who is a legend of this club.

“I think there is a link between me and him and he trusted me. He gave me a chance and I think I got it right. It’s good to play regularly in the Championship, at a difficult level. I think I’m doing fine and I’m really happy with it. “

Mengi has already made his senior debut for the club after coming off the bench in the Europa League knockout victory over LASK last season.

The 18-year-old has committed his long-term future with United by putting pen to paper on a new one that will run until 2024, with the option for an additional year, last month.

The extension came following similar deals signed by other young hopefuls Hannibal and Anthony Elanga.
